Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

In rhinoplasty, surgeons first performed their operations using mechanical tools: saws, chisels and rasps…

Over the years, technology has improved and these tools have evolved to minimize damage to the soft tissues around the nose. Before the technology reached these points, the lack of precision in rhinoplasty and the resulting uncontrollable fracture lines of the nasal bones led to a search for more sensitive surgical instruments.

Later on, piston, head and power tools were developed to overcome the limitations of these manual tools. Power-assisted rasps, milling cutters and saws have been used to achieve better results, especially in rhinoplasty surgery.

Although more technical results have been achieved, increased costs, prolonged operation times and risk of soft tissue injury have prompted rhinoplasty for more technological and more appropriate solutions.

The ‘Ultrasonic Piezo Technique’, which was developed in 2000 and started to be used safely in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, was used for the first time in Nasal Aesthetic Surgery in 2004 by Massimo Robiony. In this content, you will read about Ultrasonic Piezo Rhinoplasty.

What is Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty?

Recently, rhinoplasty surgeons have started using ultrasonic instruments powered by piezoelectricity. These devices minimize soft tissue damage because a frequency of 25 to 29 kHz is used to cut bone. However, a frequency greater than 50 kHz is required to cut neural and vascular tissues. The piezoelectric device has the ability to act selectively on bones and hard cartilage without damaging the soft tissues.

Nasal aesthetic surgeons can easily cut the nasal bone without damaging fragile tissues such as skin, mucous membranes and cartilage. Above all, the fracture lines in the nose created by the Piezoelectric device are very healthy for the operation and eliminate the risk of propagation of the fracture lines encountered in conventional instruments.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

In the operations performed with the piezo technique, the nasal bone is processed by cutting, not by breaking it as in traditional methods. This cutting process ensures that the desired result is achieved more successfully and prevents unwanted destruction of the bone.

Since the piezoelectric device does not penetrate the nerves, vessels, cartilage and muscles surrounding the nasal bone, it does not cause damage to the patient’s face, and therefore, less swelling and bruising occurs on the patient’s face after the operation.

The healing process is shorter than the rhinoplasty surgeries that do not use the piezo technique.

Which Patients Is The Piezo Technique For?

Anyone who complains about aesthetic and functional discomfort in their nose is suitable for rhinoplasty regardless of the Piezo technique. Of course, since some patients are very sensitive to swelling and bruises, patients whose skin and structure are compatible with the Piezo technique are more suitable.

Healing Process After Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty

Swelling and bruises disappear within 2 weeks after rhinoplasty with the piezo technique. During these 2 weeks, bouts of pain and cramps may be felt. They will disappear in a very short time. After the silicone tampons are removed within 5 days, the patients will feel comfortable.
